Tutor: The course is delivered by Scotland-based
freelance Colin Meek who has crafted the course over the past three years. He
has trained journalists and researchers from: This Is Money, Readers Digest,
Dow Jones, Inside Information, Legal Week, otaotr.com and University of
Hertfordshire and has ran in-house training courses for Which?, Greenpeace and
the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

Cost: £200.00 per person, £100 NUJ members.
Who should attend: Anyone interested in sharpening internet
research skills.
Content: Work smarter not harder .... The
course will cover key techniques for:
- using search engines and meta search tools more
effectively;
- precision surfing using advanced operators;
- finding people and finding out about people online;
- combining search techniques;
- investigative online research (including anonymous
surfing);
- accessing the invisible web;
- searching past and monitoring future web content -
effectively;
- using RSS feeds; and
- sorting and storing research - efficiently.
All participants are given on-going access to
updated course material through a dedicated and password-protected website.
Expected Learning Outcomes
The course takes professionals to a new level of
confidence and efficiency by giving you:
- strategies for dealing with complex and detailed
research;
- strategies to use when ordinary research techniques
hit brick walls;
- extra tools to push your research further to deliver
better and more focused material; and,
- confidence to carry out online research on sensitive
issues.
Qualifications:
It is assumed that participants will have some
knowledge of searching the internet.
